  • Move forward by using other Fairtrade products (such as sugar, biscuits and fruit)

  • Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight - and through other activities whenever possible

Schools supporting Fairtrade

St Marks School (?)

St Edmund's Catholic Primary School

is working towards making Fairtrade beverages available to staff and visitors. Fairtrade drinks are already sold to pupils on a regular basis

Convert your school

Encourage the teachers at your school to provide Fairtrade tea and coffee in the staff room and provide information about Fairtrade both to other teachers and pupils from time to time. It would be great if children could be given Fairtrade fruit juices, chocolates, biscuits etc as well, although this is not essential. Perhaps hold Fairtrade awareness days and Fairtrade stalls if possible.

Fairtrade and the curriculum

The concept of fair trade fits beautifully into the key curriculum areas of Citizenship, Geography and Religious Studies, and allows students to learn about fairness, social justice and diversity.

Suggested Actions

There are currently no criteria on the Fairtrade Foundation website - just recommendations for actions, and they have no capacity to respond to schools sending in applications for status until next year.

  • Make Fairtrade foods available to staff and students

  • Present an assembly or lesson on Fairtrade

  • Set up a Fairtrade tuck shop selling Fairtrade chocolate, bananas and snack bars

  • Get involved in the Print IT! competition for secondary school students

The Fairtrade Foundation is currently in the process of developing a new unified Fairtrade Schools initiative.

Convert your workplace

A growing number of local premises are making Fairtrade refreshments available to their staff. However, we need even more of the workplaces in the Civil Parish of Godalming to provide Fairtrade tea and coffee in their staff rooms and to make information about Fairtrade available from time to time. Could your business or place of work be one of them? If you work in Godalming we need your help to encourage your colleagues to do this and to let us know when they start or if they already make Fairtrade available.

Choose Fairtrade

Enjoy a Fairtrade espresso at the office. There are hundreds of Fairtrade certified teas and coffees to choose from, as well as Fairtrade hot chocolate, sugar, bananas, and vending machines, all at competitive prices.

Suggested Actions

  • Speak to your catering manager about offering Fairtrade foods to staff. You may be able to source from your existing supplier. Otherwise, the Fairtrade Catering Directory lists nationwide suppliers.
  • Arrange a display of Fairtrade posters and make samples available in the work kitchen and/or canteen.
  • Write an article about Fairtrade for your intranet or staff newsletter.
  • Arrange a workplace petition to persuade your company to offer Fairtrade foods.

Please note that the Fairtrade Foundation are unable to issue certificates for workplaces that offer Fairtrade products.
