Get Involved

If you live or work in Godalming you can help the campaign by:

  • Asking your boss and workmates to use Fair Trade tea and coffee in your workplace.
  • Talking to your colleagues about Fairtrade. Have some leaflets to give to those who want to know more about it. Perhaps take some small jars of different kinds of Fairtrade coffee for them to try, or find out what type of coffee is preferred and try to find a Fairtrade equivalent. There are so many to choose from and should be something to suit all tastes.
You can order posters and an information pack here.
  • Finding out if your school uses Fairtrade products in the staffroom, tuckshop or elsewhere.
  • Talking to the decision makers in your place of work, school, church and any community groups you belong to and encouraging them to raise the profile of Fairtrade in their particular venue. The Five Goals for a Fairtrade Town states 'Educational campaigns [need to be] organised in [a number of local work places (estate agents, hairdressers etc) and community organisations (churches, schools etc)] to deepen people’s understanding of the issues and deepen their commitment to Fairtrade'.

  • Letting us know of any school or workplace in Godalming that you know uses Fairtrade products and promotes Fairtrade. You can obtain a variety of leaflets about Fairtrade along with other publicity materials from the Fairtrade Foundation. Find out if there is a Fairtrade rep in your church, school, workplace or other organisation who can help you and give you any advice you need.

  • Make sure you invite the local media to any events that promote Fairtrade and/or the Fairtrade Town campaign.

Make a Fair Start

If you don't already use Fairtrade products, tea, coffee or chocolate might be good ones to start with.

All these are luxury items, even if you think you depend on them, and those who work to produce them are often exploited and poorly paid. In fact child slaves may have been used to make your chocolate if it isn't Fairtrade.

Moreover, these Fairtrade lines are readily available in supermarkets and there is a wide range of choice for tea and coffee, so if you don't like one brand you will probably find another to your taste. Take a look of the list of local Fairtrade stockists to see what they have available.
