together we can build a better world

Welcome to the Generous Town website, the place for people trying to live ethical lives that are generous to the enviroment, the people around them and those further afield in today's 'global village'.

Learn more about the issues surrounding ethical living and find out what is happening in and around Godalming.

More . . .

We are working to make Godalming become a Fairtrade Town.
Read the Fairtrade Town section to find out more about it and what you can do to help.

Start to build a better world:

Step one

Walk whenever you can, and feel healthier for it. Plan more time into your day to walk to the letter box, pop to the local shop or even walk to school and work. Think of the money you'll save, too.

Step two

Challenge yourself to get your washing dry without the help of the tumble drier for the rest of the summer. This should be possible with only a little thought and planning. This will also save you money.

Step three

Keep on politely refusing plastic carrier bags from shops. Keep reusable bags in the boot of your car, and have one or two folded up in your handbag. If you have a clean bag handy there is no need to accept plastic bags from clothes shops or any other kind of shop. For more about this see the Generous Town blog.

Step four

Don't be a mug when you get a drink from the coffee machine or water dispenser; use a glass or a mug rather than a disposable cup that uses scarce resources and ends up giving off CO2 in landfill.

Step five

Gain yourself some street cred when you swap your 4x4 or other gas-guzzler for a more energy-efficient vehicle.

Step six

When you ask someone how they are, stop to find out and really listen to what they say, . . . and maybe to what they don't say.

Take it one step at a time. Find a step that seems appropriate and take as long as you need. If the step you are currently working on needs long term effort perhaps you can choose a few easier ones to do each month or week until you've achieved it. Need some encouragement? You can now recycle your tetrapak cartons

Waverley Borough Council have installed recycling collection bins for tetrapak cartons at the following sites:

Cranleigh - Village Way car park

Haslemere - Beacon Hill Car Park

Godalming - Crown Court car park

Farnham - Upper Hart car park and Dogflud way car park

A reliable source has said that these bins will be 'emptied weekly by the recycling company. If anyone reports a bin being overfull Fotini has a contact number and the response time will be 48 hours.

'It is cartons generally (there are other companies who manufacture that type of material) ie longlife milk and juice (including children's drinks cartons) and the type of cartons containing tomato products like passata, etc. So a pretty broad spectrum. (see
picture below).

'And the even better news is that the recycling credits will come back to Waverley and therefore will benefit the local community.'

All these can be recycled

Are you worried about global warming, do you want to support local farmers or are you wondering what you can do to help world peace or stamp out poverty? The Generous Town blog offers you the opportunity to discuss the issues with others who share your concerns.

A space to meet like-minded people when it's convenient for you.

Reasons to feel good about yourself:

Did you know that if you own a computer or have a college education you are among a mere 1% of the human race? If you have money in the bank and change in your purse you are among the top 8% of the world's wealthiest people. Did you know you were so fortunate? Amazing, isn't it?

Find out more.
